The clearest interpreter of any passage is another passage. Before reading what a commentator says, always ask: what does the rest of the Bible say about this? Cross-reference, compare, and let God’s Word be its own best teacher.

Jesus said all Scripture testifies about Him (John 5:39). Every passage — law, history, poetry, prophecy — finds its ultimate meaning in the person and work of Christ. Ask of every text: where is Jesus here?

The three-step method: What does it say? (Observation) What does it mean? (Interpretation) What should I do? (Application). Never jump to application without first understanding what the text actually says and means in its original context.

A text without a context is a pretext. Read every verse in light of its surrounding verses, its chapter, its book, its testament, and the whole canon. The most common error in Bible study is lifting a verse from its context and building a doctrine on air.

The Bible was written in specific times, places, and cultures. Understanding the customs, geography, political climate, and language of the original audience transforms how you read every passage. Truth is eternal — but it was first spoken into a particular moment in history.

The same Spirit who inspired the Word must illuminate it for the reader. Study is not just a mental exercise — it is a spiritual discipline. The Holy Spirit guides believers into all truth (John 16:13). Begin every study session with prayer. The text opens differently when your heart is open first.
